One of the handiest methods to shop is by catalog. There's a large variety of catalog merchandise available from which you are able to select. Before shopping on the Internet turned common catalogs were a handy way to shop without going out of your home. Even with online catalogs the traditional catalog is however holding up strong. You will be able to find general merchandise catalogs from department stores in addition to specialty catalogs in every conceivable niche. The first of all notable catalog to be published was the Sears Catalog in 1894. Richard Sears produced a publication he called the Book of Bargains which enclosed both merchandise and favorable testimonials from previous buyers. At first the Sears Catalog started out by selling jewelry, nevertheless in time it flourished to include a broad variety of goods such as firearms, saddles, sewing machines, baby carriages, clothes, bicycles and more. In 1895 the Sears Catalog even distributed spectacles with an eye exam included in the pages of the catalog. In 1897 shoes and colorize pages were added. The remainder, as they say, is history.

The Sears Catalog is however popular with shoppers to this day. The only deviation is that now you get the option of browsing through the pages of the publication or shopping through the same merchandise online. A different very common catalog is J.C. Penney. If you can't get to one of these department stores, shopping their big seasonal catalogs is even as good if not better. Though specialty and boutique catalogs aren't quite as common as department store catalogs, top names include Cabela's, L.L. Bean and Lane Bryant. There are hundreds if not thousands of different catalogs to consider as well.

Shopping for catalog merchandise can be an pleasurable experience, because you are able to shop anywhere you decide and don't have aggressive salespeople or herds of shoppers to deal with. The procedure is easy. Once you decide what you want, either complete an order form and send it to the specific address with your payment, call and order over the telephone or find online and order over the Internet. The last two choices ask for a credit card, while mail in order payment types can normally include check or money order. Even with the additional price of shipping and handling, a lot of consumers prefer catalog shopping to a hectic day at the shopping mall.
